SOPD Releases Info on Riggs Place Armed Robbery

The following release is dated Friday, Feb. 25

South Orange police on Friday released more details about the armed robbery of two students earlier in the week.

According to police, two male Seton Hall University students were walking on Riggs Place Wednesday when they noticed they were being followed.

The students began running away from the men when one of the men caught up with them and allegedly waved a small black semi-automatic handgun at them and said, "Stop, make it easy, empty your pockets."

One of the students handed over his cellphone and college ID. The other student refused to cooperate. According to police, the robber holding the handgun then pressed it in the second student's left cheek and said, "I'm gonna have to shoot you."

This student grabbed the robber's arm, knocking out the handgun and pushed the robber to the ground.

Both students then fled. They were not followed.

The first suspect is described as a dark-skinned African-American man, approximately 5-foot, 10-inches tall and weighs roughly 160-170 lbs. He is described as having a small gap between his front teeth and some type of scar or mark on both cheeks. He is believed to be between 17 to 19 years old and was wearing a black or dark-colored puffy style jacket, a black or dark-colored hoodie or hooded sweatshirt and a black or dark-colored style skull- or watch-cap style hat.

The second suspect is described as a dark-skinned man, approximately 5-foot, 11-inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black or dark puffy jacket and a black or dark-colored skull- or watch-style hat.

A search of the area for the suspects, the handgun and or any of the items taken was conducted by the South Orange Police Department  and the Essex County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit. Nothing was reported to have been found. The investigation is continuing.
