South Orange Police Issue Advisory Regarding Copper Piping Thefts

Police send out a warning regarding recent thefts in vacant homes.

The has issued a warning to residents regarding a recent rash of thefts in vacant homes. 

The thieves are targeting homes where there is a "For Sale" sign or it is known to be empty and they are taking the copper piping and wiring out of the homes' basements.  Recently vacant homes on  and  have been hit.  In addition, another were robbed this week.

The SOPD warns that the thieves are going after copper piping and or metal fixtures deemed to be of value. They warn that if confronted, the robbers will most likely be operating a vehicle and posing as legitimate workers.

Besides for the obvious illegal activity, stealing copper wire can also be dangerous.  If not done properly, thieves committing the crime can be hit with a deadly bolt of electricity.

Residents should be aware of homes near theirs that are on the market.  If a resident sees a home being burglarized, they should call 9-1-1 or contact the SOPD directly at 973-763-3000, ext. 0.
