South Orange’s New Reusable Bag Law Starts January 1, 2020.

South Orange shoppers are encouraged to start using their own carry-out bags when shopping in town.
Starting January 1 st , plastic carry-out bags will be eliminated and a 5¢ fee will be placed on paper carry-out bags provided by retailers within South Orange. Restaurants will charge 5¢ per order for paper bags required for delivery or takeout of that order. Doggy bags are exempt from the carry-out paper bag fee. All retailers can provide compliant reusable bags for a fee, or for free, at their discretion. All shoppers are encouraged to provide whatever type of reusable carry-out bags they wish.

The new law goes into effect on January 1 st , 2020. All the specifics, including a summary flyer, FAQs, retail training guide, and the full ordinance can be found on the South Orange Village website at http://www.southorange.org/bags. Village Trustee, Walter Clarke will also hold a question and answer session at 7 pm on December 16th in the Village Offices at 76 South Orange Avenue, 3 rd Floor.
