South Orange Style Watch: Spring Edition

Nautical looks, cropped pants, and Maxi dresses top this year's trends.

Fashion trends come and go. But for the 2011 spring and summer seasons, several tried and true favorites are making a major comeback. To get an inside track on what women will be wearing during the warmer months, we turned to Robyn Fields, co-owner of Robyn Ross at 67 South Orange Avenue.

“Stripes will be huge,” said Fields, whose store just entered its fourth year of business.  “The nautical look is in. The colors blue and white will be big.”

White will also be a standout color on its own. Although the shade is always a popular one during the summer, Fields says we’ll be seeing it even more. “White is in the color palette for both seasons in a big way. Women will be wearing it alone as well as mixing it with a lot of different colors.”

Evening wear will get a touch of seduction and simplicity with two beautiful trends. Long, flowing maxi dresses will be great for going out as well as keeping cool. “We saw that trend in the past summer season,” she explained. “People are saying we’ll see it again and it will go into the fall.”

Lace, she added, will be highlighted in dresses and tops. Designers and women wearing the clothes will be using lace in layers. “Women will be wearing colors underneath the lace and allowing the colors pop through.”

If you’re going for comfort, cropped jeans will be back. The pant can be paired with the nautical look or dressed up or down. Fields said the military trend will be in style this summer. “We will see a military short,” she shared. “It has that olive green color and it’s more fitted and stylish than a traditional cargo short.”

Another color that will top the color palette is coral. Fields noted that colors that re a derivative of coral, such as orange and even pink, will be big as well. “Women shouldn’t be afraid to have fun with color.”
