When to vote, where to vote and who you can vote for in the May municipal election are included in our cheat sheet.
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Marching to the beat of its own drum, the Village of South Orange is headed for a May 14 election where voters will get the chance to decide who should be the next Village President and which three should join the Board of Trustees.
South Orange is one of the few communities in New Jersey who operate under the Village type of government, which is an adaptation of the Village Form of government. In South Orange, elections are non-partisan and the requirement for candidacy is the person be a resident registered as a voter for one year.
Most Village type governments align with the Township Committee and Mayor in the Township form correspond to the Board of Trustees and the President of the Board in the Village form. But in the case of South Orange, the Board President is also voted on separately.
