Unique Minds Welcome at TCI Film School Summer Classes
An exciting opportunity for teens and young adults with special needs to learn video production skills in a supportive environment.
Seeking a unique summer experience for your child with special needs? Operating under the motto “Unique Minds Welcome,” students at TCI Film School learn by doing. The Film School is offering new innovative courses for middle and high school students, as well as young adults, who can benefit from teaching techniques and staff support designed for individuals with social and learning challenges. But, although these classes are perfect for individuals with special needs, anyone can benefit from them and everyone is welcome.
The summer session will begin on June 4th with classes meeting for 9 sessions. Saturday day classes include Learn How to Become a YouTube Star which will teach skills needed to create and market a successful YouTube video channel and Learn Game Creation with UNITY where students will learn the basics of using UNITY, an industry standard video game creation platform. On Thursday evenings, Acting on Camera for Social Skills will help each participant build a character that they can use to help them through challenging social situations. It’s the perfect class for individuals who want to negotiate social situations like job interviews, meeting new people, or public speaking, in a more confident, effective way. From August 4th to 14th, the YouTube and UNITY classes will be offered in a more intensive day camp format. All courses are taught at TCI High School’s professionally equipped video studio in Livingston, NJ.
Recently TCI Film School, a program of The Children’s Institute, received the NJ School Boards Association’s 2015 Innovators in Special Education recognition as an example of a successful creative effort that enables special needs students to achieve their potential. In speaking about the value of the TCI Film School, Director David DiIanni commented, “Our film students have won awards for their work, been hired by professional production companies and produced videos and films that have increased their self-esteem through recognition by their school and local communities.” Nick A., a film school student chimed in, ”For the first time in my life, I can imagine doing something that makes me happy.”
