Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation Invites Area Seniors to a Week of Special Programs in Celebration of its 25th Anniversary

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., September 19, 2013 – The Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation will celebrate 25 years of providing quality senior housing in early October. In honor of the milestone, the senior living community invites older adults from South Orange and surrounding towns to participate in a week of free activities and programs. The programs are presented in collaboration with several Jewish Federation of MetroWest New Jersey agencies and the Township of South Orange Village. Village Apartments is owned and managed by the Jewish Community Housing Corporation (JCHC), a Federation partner.

All activities will be held in the community room unless otherwise noted.
· Tues., Sept. 24 – Everyone is invited into the community sukkah at 1:00 p.m. for a JCC program, “Telling Your Stories”; participants will share their memories of personal life events. At 6:00 p.m., singer Sherri Ann Mead will lead a lively community sing-along, featuring American standards and show tunes.

· Wed., Sept. 25 – Marnie Kean, LCSW from Jewish Family Services will present “Aging & You” at 10:00 a.m. as part of the JCHC’s Housecalls program, which brings healthcare providers to the JCHC communities for free presentations and supportive services. Kean will share tips on ways seniors can be more proactive about their health, and how to deal with changes in our bodies as we age.
· Fri., Sept. 27 – The Charles Bierman Home and Village Apartments will host a look back at 1988 with “Nostalgia Alley” at 10:30 a.m. The presentation will include a visual history of the year when the senior community was opened with a focus on top celebrities, television shows, and movies plus songs of that year. Attendees will enjoy a 1988 trivia challenge game as well. The Charles Bierman Home, which shares space with the Village Apartments, is operated by Daughters of Israel.
· Mon., Sept. 30 – Area seniors are invited to learn how to improve overall health through exercise and more healthful eating choices during Exercise and Healthy Living with Tami Rager at 1:45 p.m.
· Tues., Oct. 1 – An evening of musical entertainment with vocalist Candyce Giaquinto begins at 6:00 p.m. Giaquinto also plays a number of percussion, string, and wind instruments and performs various musical genres.
· Wed., Oct. 2 –Florence Dove, a trained artist and retired occupational therapist, leads a weekly art class for residents of Village Apartments. An exhibit of their finished pieces will be on display in the lobby with a Meet the Artists Exhibit at 11:30 a.m. At 4:00 p.m., everyone is invited to enjoy a history trivia game covering the past 25 years with Activities Director April Osborne.
· Thurs., Oct. 3 – Representatives from the South Orange Health Department will be available to give free blood pressure screenings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The week of activities will culminate in a private cocktail reception in honor of Village Apartments’ 25th anniversary on the afternoon of October 3 for community residents and staff, JCHC board members, Jewish Federation partners, and local and state elected officials.
