14 Union County Scholar-Athletes Earn NJSIAA Scholarship

14 Union County students are among 217 student-athletes to be honored for their achievement and get a NJSIAA college scholarship

Springfield, NJ -- 14 Union County are among 217 student-athletes to be honored for their achievement and receive a college scholarship from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

The senior students are selected by each NJSIAA member high school as their scholar-athlete of the year.

Those students were then chosen from a random drawing at a dinner for the chance to win a college scholarship from one of multiple sponsors.

“This dinner is among my favorite annual events, because we’re able both to recognize and, in some cases, provide a bit of financial assistance to some of New Jersey’s finest student-athletes,” stated Steve Timko, the NJSIAA’s executive director in a release. “Each of the young people in attendance truly stands out at their individual schools, and our association is honored to be able to bring them all together for this special evening.”

More than 6,900 students have been honored by the NJSIAA since 1993 and more than $1.5 million in college scholarships have been distributed.

  • Zachary Sandler of Arthur Johnson - $1,000 Scholarship from ShopRite,
  • Bill Ferdinando of Roselle Park - $1,000 Scholarship from NJ Advance Media,
  • Owen Colwell of Westfield - $1,000 Scholarship from ShopRite,
  • Tafari Hogarth of Abraham Clark - $1,000 Scholarship from Rothman Institute,
  • Sophie Beier of Mother Seton - $500 Scholarship from Metropolitan Golf Association,
  • Margaret Humphrey of Summit - $1,000 Scholarship from Sid Dorfman Scholarship,
  • Daniel Restrepo of Elizabeth - $1,000 Scholarship from NJSCA,
  • Lauren Soranno of Governor Livingston - $1,000 Scholarship from NJSCA,
  • Jillian Turner of New Providence - $1,000 Scholarship from NJSCA,
  • Mark Demetillo of Roselle Catholic - $1,000 Scholarship from NJSCA,
  • Nicole Walker of Union Catholic - $1,000 Scholarship from NJSCA,
  • Frank Weber of Union HS - $1,000 Scholarship from NJSCA,
  • Kayla Reaves of Plainfield - $1,000 Scholarship from Wilson Sporting Goods,
  • Frank Weber of Union - $500 Scholarship from NJ State Golf Association.
