Hello,
Welcome to my sports blog. This will be a weekly blog with observations on the world of sports. Today, I would like to share my thoughts on Major League Baseball's decision to start the season in Australia with 2 games this weekend between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
This is a terrible move by MLB in so many ways. The travel for the 2 teams puts them at a huge disadvantage. Yes, they have over a week before they have to play again in the states. However, this is a grueling trip that will take a lot out of them. This is unfair to both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. With the travel and time difference, it is ridiculous for these games to count in the standings, while no other teams have to deal with this. The impact these 2 games may have in the standings could determine the division at the end of the season. MLB wants to market the game overseas. But, I believe MLB really needs to focus on marketing the game here in this country. They lost a generation of fans. Many sports fans under 40 have no interest in baseball. There maybe some interest on a local level, but, Major League Baseball has lost it's popularity as a national sport. I believe that instead of playing meaningful regular season games overseas, they should focus on showcasing games in this country. Especially to markets that do not have Major League Baseball. Here are some ideas. How about a game in Iowa, where they filmed the movie, FIELD OF DREAMS? Or a game in Honolulu, Hawaii? Or, a game at Doubleday field where the Hall of Fame is? This is what Major League Baseball needs to do. Create interest in this country. It does not need to send its players 10,000 miles away to a country that has little interest in the sport. It's called marketing. Major League Baseball needs to focus on marketing it's game to this country. Last year, the highest viewed World Series game was 18 million in game 6 between the Red Sox and the Cardinals. The NBA finals had over 20 million viewers for game 6 and game 7. The NFL had 30 regular season games that had over 20 million viewers. The Red Sox are supposed to be one of the marquee franchises in baseball. This does not bode well in the foreseeable future. Major League Baseball needs to focus on creating more interest in it's product here in this country rather than overseas.
