Unfortunately, many victims of extreme weather disasters are being taken advantage of by unethical contractors. Property Casualty 360 features an article on the 6 Worst Contractor Scams. Some of the scams include asking for a large sum of money in advance, using shoddy materials, and creating more damage so that insurance companies will pay for it.

The Coalition against Insurance Fraud Recommends that homeowners do the following:

·       Avoid contractors that go door to door
·       Make sure you verify their licenses – you can do this through the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance Call (609) 984- 7910
·       Make sure you get a contract
·       Screen contractors through the Better Business Bureau
·       Work with a reputable insurance company (Reiner Insurance!) and agent to prevent getting scammed
