Protect your home from frozen pipes

If you do not take the necessary precautions to protect your pipes your homeowners insurance may not cover any damage that could occur.

Frozen pipes are a major concern for homeowners in the winter time. If you do not take the necessary precautions to protect your pipes your homeowners insurance may not cover any damage that could occur. Typical damage would include pipes bursting. Disaster Safety lists many ways to protect your pipes including:

  • Install a water leak detection system, available at your plumbing supply store, which will alert someone in your household if water is detected.
  • Shut off the water supply during periods when the home may be unoccupied, particularly when colder weather is expected.
  • To maintain proper drainage and reduce the risk of leaks in basements, remove snow from window wells and against all walls.
  • Make sure gutters are clean and stable to ensure proper drainage.
