There’s a reason why Sirius/XM satellite radioplays Rabbi Bob Alper’s comedy bits several times daily : Bob’s unique background…he’s an ordained rabbi who served congregations for fourteen years and holds a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary…prepared him well for a twenty-six year comedy career with wonderfully unique material presented in a way that’s intelligent, sophisticated, and 100% clean.

And so it’ll be 90 minutes of non-stop laughter on Saturday, January 24th, when Rabbi Bob Alper, “the world’s only practicing clergyman doing stand-up comedy…intentionally,” returns to Pompton Lakes in a program open to the entire community. (People brand Bob’s shows as “Gentile friendly.”)

The New York Times put it succinctly: Bob “…had the audience convulsing.” The Chicago Tribunedescribed Bob’s act as “Hilarious. Relaxed, clean, unhurtful. A warm type of humor.”

Bob’s fresh, contemporary, and totally “unorthodox” style has been delighting audiences from Hollywood’s IMPROV to The Montreal Comedy Festival and Muslimfest 2009 (this is not a joke). His unique brand of humor appeals to everyone – synagogues, mosques, churches, corporate events, colleges, and theatres throughout North America and England.

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Bob is a graduate of Lehigh University, was ordained at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and is the first Jewish person ever to earn a doctorate from the Princeton Theological Seminary. He has served congregations in Buffalo and Philadelphia, where he continues to conduct High Holiday services.

Bob began his comedy career in 1986 when he entered the “Jewish Comic of the Year Contest” at the Going Bananas club in Philadelphia. Television, radio and personal appearances followed as he quickly honed his distinctive approach to stand-up. He has been seen on Good Morning America, The Today Show, Showtime, the BBC, and CNN, among many others.

Today, Bob performs nearly 80 shows per year, drawing tremendous audience numbers and response. His humor is fast-paced and sophisticated, yet gentle and unhurtful: all in all, a charming and affable comedian. In addition to his solo shows, Bob performs frequently in an extraordinary pairing with Muslim comedian Azhar Usman.

Bob is the author of three books that further showcase his considerable talents, including Thanks. I Needed That. a new inspirational collection. He’s also produced two best-selling comedy CDs, and a 102-minute DVD, What are you…a comedian?
