UPDATE: Fatal Mass Shooting Leaves NJ Community ‘Shaken, Heartbroken’

The shooting is under investigation, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said.

UNION TOWNSHIP, NJ — One person was killed and six were injured in a shooting Saturday night at a Union Chick-fil-A, and the killer remains at large, authorities said Sunday.

“We now know that last night’s shooting in Union Township tragically claimed one life and left six others injured,” Governor Mikie Sherrill said Sunday. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones, and we are hoping for the full recovery of those who were injured.”

Sherrill noted the preliminary investigation shows the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence and that there is no immediate ongoing threat to the general public.

“We encourage the community to remain vigilant and report any information to local law enforcement,” Sherrill said, pledging New Jersey stands with the Union Township community.

Police responded around 9 p.m. to the fast food restaurant on Route 22 and found seven victims, one of whom was pronounced dead, authorities said. The remaining six victims suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, according to authorities.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release Sunday.

Union Township Mayor Patricia Guerra-Frazier echoed Sherrill’s statements Sunday afternoon.

“Our community is heartbroken and shaken by the tragic act of violence that occurred last night at a local Chick-fil-A,” she said. “What should have been an ordinary evening has left families grieving, individuals injured, and our entire Township in shock.”

Guerra-Frazier praised the swift response and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the work that remains to ensure the safety of our communities,” she said.
