Dayton Loses Power for 45 Minutes

Impact was minimal according to school message.

Jonathan Dayton High School was without power for approximately 45 minutes this morning following a felled tree limb.

In a message to parents, Dayton assistant principal Ron Slate said that students and staff were not in harm's way during the power outage. Slate indicated that overzealous parents and students made numerous calls to the police during the outage. He cautioned parents from calling police in future instances, saying that repeated calls could tie up communications.

Students in their first period classes while building staff manned the hallways. Emergency lights were automatically activated. Slate said students were escorted during trips to and from the bathrooms and that the nurse and guidance office were provided for any student that needed to travel.

Once JCP&L was able to get power back to the building, the students returned to a regularly scheduled day starting with period 3, and all lunches ran as scheduled.

"It gives me great comfort to know that students and staff handled the situation with the necessary decorum required in these events," Slate said in the email to parents.
