Aeschylus was born circa 525 B.C. northwest of Athens in Greece, to parents that were members of the nobility. The tragedies he wrote have established him as an innovator who set early standards and conventions for the tragic form. Having written over 70 plays, many of which were honored with first prizes in the Athenian contests, only seven have survived. Agamemnon is the first play in a trilogy that survived intact. Aeschgylus produced, directed, designed, choreographed and composed music for his works and acted in them. He was also a soldier, fighting in the battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., and defending the Greeks against the Persian invaders. Legend has it that he died in 456 B.C. when, while in Sicily, an eagle dropped a tortoise on his head.
On Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 10 am, the Great Books Discussion Group, which meets on the third Thursday of each month, will be meeting to investigate various aspects of Agamemnon. The Great Books compilation may be purchased for $25 at the Circulation Desk. The discussion group welcomes new members. Participants are invited to come to any or all of the sessions.
