Saint James the Apostle School recently celebrated Read Across America with a week filled with activities related to the joys of readings. Older and younger students paired up for Buddy Reading and enjoyed reading books of all types to one another. In addition, students made bookmarks that encouraged and promoted reading to be donated to Covenant House. Students brought in used books for classroom book swaps and for a book drive also to benefit Covenant House. The Book Drive Challenge was to collect 500 books for donation, which the students well exceeded with a grand total of 1,629 books. The final day of the week-long event featured the entire student body taking the Reader’s Oath Pledge, choral readings of Dr. Seuss classic stories, and, finally, for surpassing the Book Drive Challenge, several lucky students were able to throw whipped cream pies at principal, Mrs. Patricia Dolansky, who was happy to be ‘pied’ for the sake of reading!
