Saint James the Apostle Students Say Field Trip "ROCKS!"

Fourth and fifth graders enjoy a day at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum.

The 4th and 5th grade students at Saint James the Apostle School in Springfield recently enjoyed a field trip to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. After an introduction to various rock classifications, all students were able to collect rock samples including basalt, sandstone, coal, marble, garnet and slate to bring home. Students also enjoyed a scavenger hunt inside the museum. They had to find dinosaur footprints, Real and Fool’s Gold, three ore minerals (Franklinite, Willemite and Zincite), Magnetic Rock and 5000 soda cans! The trip concluded with an hour long tour of the mine and a mesmerizing display of over 700 specimens of fluorescent minerals from all over the world in the Zobel Exhibit Hall. Teachers from Saint James received a Target Field Trip grant to make the trip possible.
