When was the last time our SFD rang your doorbell to insure your smoke detectors were present and functioning?...Never in my 30+yr residence in Springfield...Real FD's call it public service. When was the last public campaign relating to fire safety launched except for a lame billboard stating the obvious..."grill safety for the summer" really? I guess they are too busy as the remaining 20-22 hrs of their 24 hour shift are booked. Aren't we paying these guys to educate, serve and prevent? Take a look at many of our FF's, overweight, smoking and out of shape. Just because they are in house as they are today does not mean good service...For example, the fairly recent Evergreen Deli fire the First due Engine crew was overheard on the radio asking where the hydrant was on arrival to this electrical fire...are you kidding me? Last I checked, hydrants don't have legs to move about the street...this is called PRE-PLANNING; Our sluggish, salary top heavy paid department must have been fighting some 4 alarm fire in our town to not have planned that out. No excuse...High pay does not = high performing. With the downtime our FF's have they should be in the best shape of any Dept and be out and about educating the public and being visible. For what we pay them instead of sleep, smartphones and their next meal we should see them interacting with the public...not just visiting a school in town because that is where one of our FF's kids attend. What about the other schools? No fire education for them?
