Springfield To Offer Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

The training will be at 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Chisholm Community Center, 100 South Springfield Ave.

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — The Springfield Health Department, in partnership with the Township of Springfield, is hosting a free youth mental health first aid training 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Chisholm Community Center, 100 South Springfield Ave.

Registration is free and breakfast and lunch are included.

The training is designed for adults who regularly interact with young people, such as parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other concerned residents who want to learn how to help adolescents (age 12-18) experiencing a mental health or addiction issue or a crisis.

The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include: anxiety, depression, substance abuse, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavioral disorders (including ADHD) and eating disorders.
