Erica Scudero, Springfield public school district's supervisor of educational programs, discussed changes to elementary school students' report cards at Monday's Board of Education meeting.
Scudero said the revisions have been made to be consistent with the state common core standards for mathematics and English language arts.
Students will now receive a number: 4-1, with 4 meaning "exceeds expectations"
3 meaning "Meets expectations"
2 meaning "Approaching standard expectations"
1 meaning "Below expectations"
Students will also receive a 4 - 1 grade in areas of work and study habits as well as social and personal development.
Scudero said the changes have been made in response to requests from parents who feel the previous report cards are antiquated. She added that some found that the previous "check, N or S" didn't tell them much about their student's progress.
The Board also discussed that going forward progress reports and report cards will be emailed to parents and guardians. No hard copies will be sent home.
Schools superintendent Michael Davino said some parents have expressed concern that because their password is their child's date of birth it might be easy for others to gain access to that information. Davino said that in order to view a student's report card, an email must first be sent to parents. That email will contain an individualized hyperlink that will pertain only to that student's report card. Only after clicking that link, will the password be entered.
Parents and guardians are reminded to make sure the district has their most current email address on file.
