SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Students from Springfield's Edward V. Walton Early Childhood Center were evacuated Monday afternoon due to the smell of smoke from a transformer.

All students and staff were evacuated at 2:45 p.m. after the smell was found in School Principal Dr. Adriana B. Coppola's office.

The Springfield Fire Department were called and responded. They cleared the school for students and staff to re-enter at 3:03 p.m., Coppola said in a letter to parents.

Dismissal was delayed by a few minutes as a result so that students could get their items from the classrooms.

"I would like to thank the Springfield Fire Department for their quick responsiveness. In addition, I would thank the Walton staff and students for remaining calm and proceeding with protocol," Coppola said.
