Registration is now open for “Beyond Bullying: Building Schools Where Everyone Belongs.” The two-day conference event features Stan Davis, a leading voice in the anti-bullying crusade. The event is co-sponsored by NJ Coalition for Bullying Awareness and Prevention, Kean University’s Counselor Education Department, the Nathan Weiss Graduate College, and the Kean University College of Education.

“Davis’ early work, captured in his groundbreaking book, Schools Where Everyone Belongs, started the anti-bullying movement in the U.S. and remains to this day the one book every anti-bullying advocate should have,” said Stuart Green, Director of the NJ Coalition for Bullying Awareness and Prevention.

Teachers, counselors, nurses, administrators, and other education professionals are invited to come and learn how to make their schools a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment. The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 8:30 – 4:30 pm in Kean University’s STEM building. Participants attending Thursday’s conference may register to attend an intimate advanced seminar Friday, Oct. 24 from 8:30am – 4:30pm. Those attending the second day follow-up seminar will further deepen their knowledge and skills through guided practice, supportive feedback, and peer discussions.

“Our national dialogue about bullying prevention has focused almost exclusively on preventing mean behavior,” said Davis. “Though this is important, we will never completely eliminate hurtful behavior. For that reason, we also need to focus on building belonging, community, and resiliency for all youth. In doing so, we can reduce the harm that can result from mean behavior. In this conference you will learn research based skills and knowledge that will help you to be a more effective change agent – a champion for young people.”
