Volunteer to Help in Special Needs Recreation Programs
Help a child learn a new sport or hobby!

Would you like to help a child learn how to play tennis? Summit Community Programs hosts a special needs tennis class filled with a number of enthusiastic kids looking to learn tennis or improve their strokes and other basic techniques. Led by tennis pros, the class needs a few volunteers to pair up with kids, play with them and simply be their “buddy” during the class. As a volunteer you receive credit for community service and will be making a huge difference. Class meets in an indoor gym in Summit NJ. Group A meets 12:00-12:45pm, and Group B meets 12:45-1:30pm. The dates are Saturdays, April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16. You are welcome to help at either or both groups. You do not need much tennis experience (just being able to hit a ball over the net); just being comfortable giving a child a hand is mostly what’s needed. Please contact Kevin at summitcan@gmail.com if you have questions or to volunteer for the tennis program.
Also due to our involvement in special needs programs, we sometimes become aware of programs from other providers in the area who might need volunteers. Volunteers receive credit for community service in these programs as well. This Millburn Paper Mill Playhouse need volunteers for its special needs creative drama group, Theatre for All! The group is led by an experienced drama teacher but needs volunteers (aged 12+) to help young drama students participate in the class. Volunteers do not need specific drama or acting experience but should be comfortable working with younger children while showing energy and enthusiasm. The theatre group meets Saturdays from 9:45-11:00am from April 18 – May 23. Please contact Leslie at tshirl@aol.com for more information about volunteering for the Paper Mill theatre program.
The Connection for Women and Families in Summit needs teen volunteers to help participants in the water at their special needs open swim group. The group currently meets Saturdays 11:20 am-12:30pm, and there are other opportunities to volunteer on Sunday as well. Swim volunteers do not need lifeguard certified but should be comfortable helping others in the water. Please contact Andrea at for more information about volunteering for the Connection special needs swim programs.
