Why is Early Detection for Melanoma Important?
VIDEO: Learn why early detection for melanoma is vital, from local expert Dr. Richard Bezozo, president of MoleSafe.

Melanoma, the most serious and deadly type of skin cancer, will claim approximately 9,710 lives in 2014, and there will be more than 76,600 new cases of melanoma, according to the American Cancer Society. Currently the only true cure for melanoma is early detection. It’s essential to be vigilant about your skin, monitor your moles and lesions, see your physician or dermatologist on a routine basis, avoid the sun and tanning beds, protect yourself with sunscreen and protective clothing, and enroll in an early detection screening and surveillance program. The five-year survival rate for melanoma in an advanced stage is only 15 percent. However, if melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent, further supporting the importance of early detection.
