Coyote, Fox Attack 3 Dogs In Summit, Police Say

One dog was attacked by a coyote and two more by a likely rabid fox, the Summit Police Department said in a series of posts on Facebook.

SUMMIT, NJ — In three separate incidents, three dogs were attacked in Summit over the past couple of days—one by a coyote and two by a fox likely suffering from rabies, the Summit Police Department said in a series of posts on Facebook.

The first bite occurred on Dale Drive, police said in their first post on the matter Sunday night. Police added that following the attack, the coyote ran away into a wooded area.

In an update Monday night, police said two more dogs were attacked by a likely rabid fox that evening near Mountain Avenue and Larned Road.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, foxes typically don't attack humans as their natural tendency is to flee rather than to fight. However, a rabid fox might act aggressively unprovoked.

All three attacks have been reported to Animal Control and the Health Department and officials are working to trap the animals.

"Dogs smaller than 40 pounds are often regarded by coyotes as prey," the Summit Police Department wrote on Facebook. "Do not leave [pets] outside unattended, especially after dark. Larger dogs may also be attacked if they are seen as a threat or competitor."

Police suggested that anyone who encounters a coyote make loud noises or yell and wave their arms to scare them off. Food and trash should also be kept secure, police said.

Officials are urging people to report animal encounters to the police non-emergency line 908-273-0051.
