Man Charged After Shooting, Day-Long Manhunt In Summit

Police said the suspect, seen near Orchard Street and Roosevelt Way in Summit early Saturday, was captured in Plainfield.

SUMMIT, NJ — Summit police have captured a man they say shot a 35-year-old Vauxhall man Saturday and led authorities on a day-long manhunt.

Jaime Tapia-Lobos, 33, of Irvington, was arrested in Plainfield hours after police issued an alert stating he was last spotted near Orchard Street and Roosevelt Way in Summit. Tapia-Lobos first-degree attempted murder, assault, and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.

According to authorities, Tapia-Lobos was involved in a shooting on Park Avenue shortly after 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said Tapia-Lobos and two other unidentified men were standing on the sidewalk when a fourth man — whom police identified as the victim — drove up, got out of his car and approached the group.

According to police, Tapia-Lobos and the victim immediately got into a heated argument that turned physical. Police said the Tapia-Lobos took out a gun and fired at the victim, striking him three times at close range.

According to authorities, Tapia-Lobos fled on foot toward Ashwood Avenue while the victim drove himself to Overlook Medical Center. The victim was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where he was in critical condition following surgery, police said.

Police said Tapia-Lobos and the victim had been arguing for two days before the shooting.

Tapia-Lobos is being held in Union County jail pending a June 26 court appearance.
