Back To School On Monday For Summit Students
Summit's reopening plan was announced this month, and the dashboard of COVID cases for the school community was updated again Friday.
SUMMIT, NJ — Summit public school students start their first day of the 2021-2022 school year this Monday. The Summit School District has set up a dashboard to let the school community know how many students in each school have tested positive for COVID. As of Friday, six students and staff in the district were listed as having tested positive.
Due to evolving guidance from the state amid the highly transmissible Delta variant of the virus, this year's school reopening will look different from what was expected as schools let out in June.
Summit Superintendent Scott Hough announced his district's back-to-school plans on Aug. 16. In keeping with state mandates, Summit students will be masked, they will have to quarantine after certain types of travel, and classes will not be remote except under a few circumstances. The New Jersey Department of Education had told all schools they "must plan to provide full-day, full-time, in-person instruction and operations for the 2021-2022 school year." For many districts, that means more students in the buildling at one time, rather than a percentage learning remotely.
In Summit, for now, remote learning will be only offered to those who are sick with COVID, unvaccinated students who return from international travel and are quarantining, and students quarantining because of a close contact, the plan says.

Different districts have announced a variety of plans for students who travel. Many are requiring some quarantining and/or a PCR test when students return from states not contiguous to New Jersey, particularly if students are unvaccinated.
