Redesigning a room? Don't throw out Grandma's chairs.
Award winning interior designer, Kingsley Belcher Knauss, explains how to breathe new life into your traditional favorite furniture.
When redesigning a room many clients wrestle with what to do with their old favorites, such as Grandma's chairs or that table you bought years ago while traveling. Your home reflects you and it's important to keep what you love.
If you love that furniture it's worth investing a few dollars or an afternoon of elbow grease into making those pieces relevant again. Breathe new life into those sad old chairs with updated upholstery and paint the oak side table a cool new color. You'll love those old favorites even more when you've transformed them into showstoppers that work with the rest of your new room.
How to do it?

Have fun with color and mix up styles to add flair to traditional styling. For instance, to keep this traditional chair impactful we chose a bronze linen for the face of the chair and used cheerful raspberry and plum damask on the chair back and bolster pillow--it stands out as a current take on traditional pieces of the past. We paired the traditional chair with an elegantly streamlined sofa that is a beautifully hand crafted William Yeoward couture piece from the Profiles showroom.
The colors on the painted furniture in this family room create unity with the adjacent kitchen. The painted coffee table picks up the blue tones of the kitchen island nearby. The kitchen cabinets are a similar color to the fun and funky painted pashima taupe hexagonal antique table between the sofa and lounge chair.
