Summit High School Theatre Arts Department proudly presents The Outsiders, Christopher Sergel’s stage adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s groundbreaking novel about rival teenage gangs set in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The play follows Ponyboy Curtis, a young Greaser navigating the fraught social divide between his working-class friends and the wealthy Socs. As tensions between the groups escalate and ultimately erupt into violence, Ponyboy is forced to confront questions of loyalty, brotherhood, and belonging.
Both heartbreaking and hopeful, The Outsiders explores the universal desire to be seen, valued, and understood. Ponyboy’s journey challenges audiences to look beyond labels and differences to recognize our common humanity. The play’s iconic line, “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” reminds us to hold onto our sense of wonder, empathy, and compassion even when the world around us becomes difficult and complicated— a message that remains as powerful and relevant today as it was when the story was first written.
The Outsiders will be performed in the Summit High School auditorium on Thursday, November 12 at 6 PM, Friday, November 13 at 7 PM, and Saturday, November 14 at 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at https://cur8.com/projects/hilltopper.
