Commuter Parking - Reserved Employee Section at Broad Street Garage
Commuter Parking at Broad Street Garage has changed.
It looks like the Summit parking people have started enforcing the "employee permit only" section on the top deck of the Broad Street Garage for the first time in the dozen plus years I've lived in Summit. This morning there was a guard limiting access to the garage because the non-employee spaces were full. I've never seen more than a handful of the employee spaces used and that section has always been a spill-over for when the garage was almost full. The effect of this is that Summit residents will be diverted to the surface lot and non-residents who have in the past parked there will be out of luck. The guard asserted that the employee section fills up later in the morning (I arrived about 8:30). Does anyone know if that is true? Putting aside the political question of whether tax paying residents should subsidize local businesses through reserved discounted parking for employees (reasonable people could differ on that), my opinion of this enforcement action will differ depending on whether those employee spaces are really used or this is just an authoritarian effort to keep non-residents from having availability in the surface lot.
