Newark Man Shoots Self After Chase, Killing Mother Of His Kids

The man was arrested in Summit where he shot himself. He had been charged in December after trying to abduct his kids, authorities say.

SUMMIT, NJ — A Newark man is hospitalized after he shot himself following the murder of the mother of his children and a 10-mile police chase that ended in Summit on Tuesday morning, authorities report.

Kareem Dawson, 31, of Irvington had been ordered to stay away from his ex-girlfriend after he kidnapped their daughter and tried to abduct their son from a day care in Maplewood last December, according to multiple news outlets.

Newark Police responded to the 100 block of Scheerer Avenue in Newark at around 8 a.m. where they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim, identified as Tiffany Wilson, 28, of Newark was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead, acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino reported.

When police tried to arrest Kareem Dawson, 31, of Irvington he led police on a 10-mile chase to Beauvoir Avenue and Beauvoir Place in Summit.

Dawson then shot himself in Summit and is currently being treated at an area hospital for the non-fatal, self-inflicted wound, Laurino said.

Summit Police sent out an alert to residents around 11 a.m. reporting the closure of streets in the area due to a criminal investigation.

Dawson is facing murder charges.

Dawson and the Wilson previously were in a "domestic relationship," according to a preliminary investigation.

On Dec. 6, 2017, Dawson allegedly took his four-year-old daughter from a place in Inglewood and then drive to his son's day care in Maplewood where he attacked Wilson white she was dropping the boy off, according to nbcnewyork.

Dawson tried to pull Wilson out of the car and slammed her to the ground and also had possession of a gun during the attack, according to tapinto.

Dawson fled with his daughter but was later arrested by police in Woodbridge. The daughter was returned to Wilson.
