Electrical Fire Sparks In Summit, Displaces Residents

Breaking: Summit residents were placed in a temporary overnight shelter following an electrical fire on Cottage Lane early Thursday morning.

SUMMIT, NJ — Two Cottage Lane homes caught fire due to an electrical short early Thursday morning causing residents to be displaced, Summit Fire Department announced.

The Summit Fire Department responded the structure fire at 2:10 a.m. where crews found fire in the basements of both 7 and 9 Cottage Lane homes.

The fire was determined to have started from an electrical wire short in circuit boxes currently under repair by Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), Summit Summit Fire Department reported.

The fires were contained to the area where they started and were under control at around 2:25 a.m. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist residents with temporary overnight shelter.

During investigation, a safe home issue was discovered at 5 Cottage Lane. City of Summit safe home inspectors were contacted and responded to address to investigate.
