Estelle Marks, 96 passed away peacefully on November 2, 2021, after a long and full life. She was thankful for all her friends and family who supported her and provided loving care, especially her son, Zach Marks.
At her request, no service will be held.
Estelle was born November 28, 1924, at Morris Union Hospital in the Bronx borough of New York City, to Herschel and Dora Horowitz.
Estelle graduated from the High School of Music and Art in NYC in 1942. She attended New York University (NYU) but left college to join the US Women’s Army Core (WAC) in 1943 during World War II. While serving in the Army in San Antonio, Texas, she met her former husband, George P Marks III, who predeceased her in 2004. After serving in the army, Estelle returned to New York University on the GI Bill and graduated with a degree in education.

Estelle started her career working part-time at NY Public Library main branch on 42nd street while finishing her degree at NYU. This job led to her interest in becoming a librarian and she made the decision to pursue a master’s degree in library science at Columbia University.
Following graduation, Estelle and George moved to Kenvil, New Jersey and she worked as the librarian at Morris Hills Regional High School. They moved to Colonia, NJ in 1956 and Estelle started working as a librarian at Woodbridge High School progressing to her role as library supervisor for the Woodbridge Township school system.

During her career, Estelle was selected to join Who’s Who of American Women and was instrumental in the transformation of the Woodbridge school library system from book libraries to media libraries, bringing the first computers into the school’s libraries.
Following her retirement from the Woodbridge School system in 1984, Estelle took a job for 2 years as the school librarian at the US Army base in Schweinfurt, Germany. After her second retirement, Estelle moved to Lakewood, NJ, and lived with her partner Leonard Goodman who pre-deceased her in death. In 2018, Estelle moved to Spring Meadows in Summit NJ then Brandywine Assisted living in Watchung, NJ to be closer to her son.
Estelle Is survived by her loving son Hugh Zachary Marks and daughter-in-law Nancy Galietti of Summit NJ, her favorite granddaughter, Stephanie Marks of Jackson WY, and favorite grandson Geoff Marks, his wife Lauren of Darien CT, and their children Henry and Annie, her favorite great-grandchildren. Her son, George P Marks IV, predeceased her in 1981.
