During WWII Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever went to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money. The young Keller son, a pilot, is reported missing during the war. The love affair of Chris Keller and Ann Deever, the bitterness of Deever's son returned from the war to find his father in prison and his father's partner free, reaches an electrifying climax.
- Joe Keller 60's, patriarch of the Keller household, is "a business man these many years, but with the imprint of the machine-shop worker and boss still upon him."
- Kate Keller 50s-60s, matriarch of the Keller household, is "a woman of uncontrolled inspirations, and an overwhelming capacity for love."
- Chris Keller Late 20s - 30s, a World War II veteran, is an idealist and "a man capable of immense affection and loyalty."
- Ann Deever Late 20s - early 30s, is "gentle but, despite herself, capable of holding fast to what she knows."
- George Deever The same age as Chris Keller, but he looks older. A war hero, Kate says to him, "They made an old man out of you. Look, you're gray."
- Dr. Jim Bayless Late 30s - 40s, also a war veteran, longs for a more meaningful life. He is "a wry self-controlled man, an easy talker, but with a wisp of sadness that clings to his self-effacing humor."
- Sue Bayless The same age as Dr. Bayless, is hard-boiled, flirtatious and realistic.
- Frank Lubey A bit older than Chris, managed to avoid the draft. He has "a tendency toward peevishness when crossed, but always wanting it pleasant and neighborly." He dabbles in astrology.
- Lydia Lubey About the same age as Ann, is "a robust, laughing girl," and the mother of three young children.
- Bert An energetic, 6-10-year-old boy.
