Toast is based on of food writer Nigel Slater's bittersweet childhood. His mother is a poor cook who can only make toast, whereas Nigel laps up cookbooks as if they were porn. His dad worries there is something "wrong" with his son. After Nigel's mother dies, a new cleaner, Mrs. Potter, arrives on the scene. Her charm and lemon meringue pies bewitch Nigel's dad. To escape the madness, Nigel takes a kitchen job in his local pub, where he discovers a world of culinary opportunity.
