SHOP TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE HOLIDAY HANDCRAFT SALE

A large collection of quilts, rugs, tote bags, greeting cards, wall hangings, and a selection of Christmas items including pillow shams, ornaments and imaginative cards are available: all made by a group of Egyptian women from the Zabaleen Community in Cairo.
Zabaleen families have collected garbage in the sprawling city of Cairo for generations and lived in the poorest of conditions. Twenty years ago a volunteer group organized an Association dedicated to improve the lives of these families through education, training and the production of handcrafts.
Women were brought together to learn to weave and make patchwork quilts. The making of paper was added to the project and a cottage industry took hold. The children are required to attend the small school on the premises of the training center.
All purchases make a difference in someoneʼs life. With Cairo in turmoil, the bazaars and markets have closed down and our Summit Sale is crucial. I am glad we have brought the enterprise to Summit in support of my Egyptian college classmates who originated the USA sales.
