Firefighter Injured Battling Blaze In Summit

The fire started on the first floor and moved to the second floor and the attic before being extinguished, officials said.

SUMMIT, NJ - One firefighter was injured in a late night blaze in a home on Baltusrol Road on Thursday, according to officials. The injury to the first responder was minor and no residents were harmed, officials said.

The Summit Fire Department was dispatched to a house on Baltusrol Road shortly after 9 p.m. and upon arrival found smoke coming from the house, officials said.

Firefighters reported that fire was found initially on the first floor of the house, but crews were able to determine that it spread to the second floor and to the attic through void spaces. Void spaces are areas that is fully enclosed rooms or walls within a building.

The flames being in the void space made them difficult to extinguish, officials said. The fire that was declared under control shortly after 10 p.m., according to first responders.

The Summit Police Department and Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad assisted at the scene along with the Millburn, Springfield, Union, Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Mountainside fire departments.

Fire Departments from Kenilworth, Fanwood and Roselle Park were called to provide station coverage and were called to Route 24 to assist with a vehicle fire.

The fire is being investigated by the Summit Fire Department Investigation Unit.
