First Day of School for Summit Schools

Today was the first day of the 2009-2010 school year for students in Summit, including those attending a new school in town.

Today was the first day of school for students throughout Summit, including for those attending their first day of school ever at a brand new school.

It was the official opening of the Cornerstone Preschool (located at 561 Springfield Avenue), which is in the annex of Christ Church. School Director Marybeth Doctor (see photos) enthusiastically met her new students and their parents as they arrived, and did a great job in helping them with the expected anxiety of leaving their children on their very first day of school. Cornerstone has both a nursery class for children up to 2.5 years old, and a Pre-K class for children from the ages of 2.5 to 5 years old. Doctor said that they have 43 students currently registered, with a long waiting list already for next year. The school is 'interdenominational', and Doctor said that all holidays and events of the caledar year will be observed and treated respectfully. Such an example is the upcoming last day of Ramadan, which is known as Eid ul-Fitr.  The students will have a picnic that day.  And the school will observe the International Day of Peace/UN Peace Day on 9/21.

Several blocks away, new freshmen as well as returning sophomores, juniors, and seniors began the new school year at Summit High School.  Despite the cool weather, many students walked to school wearing their summer shorts.
