Former Mayor Long: Getzendanner Should Resign

Walter Long served as mayor from 1996 to 2003.

To the Editor:

Like many residents of Summit, I have been following the issue of Councilman Getzendanner’s indiscretions and poor judgment with much concern for the community, the Mayor and Common Council and the employees of Summit. I consider public service to the highest calling for a citizen and my 8 years as Mayor of Summit, 1996-2003, were a privilege that I will always cherish. It was a special honor to work on behalf of the residents of Summit with a group of dedicated Council men and women and the city’s professional city staff. We had one goal which was to do the best possible job for our constituents. We had our differences, but we never had to question one another’s integrity or actions as elected officials. The council meetings were run in an orderly manner, the public was treated with respect, and we accomplished our goals and objectives.

Because of the unconscionable actions of Tom Getzendanner, the Mayor, members of Common Council and city staff are unable to focus on the important issues facing Summit in these economically challenging times. Council President Bomgaars and his colleagues are mired in official inquires, investigations and ethics training, all because of the actions of one misguided individual who has cost the city thousands of  hours, thousands of dollars and given us a tarnished reputation. Judge Beglin’s report did not go far enough in reprimanding Mr. Getzendanner and should have recommended his removal from Council. Only Mayor  Glatt has the courage to make this demand, and Common Council should support his request.

As I mentioned, it was an honor and privilege to be Mayor of Summit and one of the greatest experiences of my life. And I think all my fellow council members share these feelings. However how can we expect any citizen of Summit to pursue public service when they see the performance of this council? Who would want to run for office or be appointed to a volunteer board? President Bomgaars must take immediate action and work with Common Council to remove Tom Getzendanner from office. However if Councilman Getzendanner really cared about the City of Summit and put his ego aside, he would resign.

2011 is an important election year for Summit, a new Mayor and 3 Council seats. We need to attract citizens who are willing and eager to take on the challenges of governing this great city and I’m afraid this will not happen until Tom Getzendanner is removed from office. President Bomgaars and members of Common Council, please do what you know is right and for once take action and get rid of your embarrassment.  My best wishes for a strong and well governed Summit.
