Fundraiser Created For Summit Officer Killed In I-78 Crash
Summit Officer and former Somerville local, Matthew Tarentino leaves behind a wife, two boys ages 3 and 2 and another child due in August.

SUMMIT, NJ — A fundraiser has been created in memory of Summit Police Officer Matthew Tarentino who was one of two killed in a fatal three-car accident on Interstate 78 East in Bernards Township Tuesday morning.
Tarentino, 29, was married to Victoria and had two sons, Robert, 3, and Raymond, 2, and a third child due in August. The former Somerville local moved to Summit where he had served as an officer since 2012.
The Summit Police Athletic League is now asking for donations to "help support the family in this time of need and ensure that Tarentino's legacy is never diminished."

"This loss has greatly affected not only our law enforcement community and the citizens of Summit, but countless people far and wide," The Summit Pal posted on the fundraising page. "Matthew Tarentino epitomized what a law enforcement officer should be: a respected, trusted colleague with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm for his calling."
Tarentino was on his way to work in Summit when a westbound car crossed over the Interstate 78 median near exit 33 and struck him and another eastbound car at 6:20 a.m. on May 30. Two others were injured in the accident and transported to Morristown Hospital. However, one of those two victims has been declared dead, State Police Capt. Brian Polite confirmed.

Tarentino was loved by many in the local community as law enforcement officials, friends, residents and neighbors took to social media to pour out their sympathy.
A video in tribute of Tarentino was created by Hometowne Television:
In a recent interview Tarentino talked about why he chose his profession:
"My entire family on my mother's side is somehow involved in law enforcement. From a young age, I thought 'ah' that's an honorable job. A job that will let me go out and help other people - and not just help other people - but help build a strong community bond with the people who live in the town."
The fundraiser has already raised close to $35,000 in one day. The goal is to raise $500,000.
From members of the Tarentino Family:
"Thank you for your consideration and support during this deeply difficult time. Our family has been shaken to its core with the loss of the most tremendous man, our brother, Matt.
His character was unparalleled in today's age. Matt held himself to the highest standard and would not waver in times of adversity. He will always be remembered as a man of incredible strength and honor. For his family, we will remember his gentleness and devotion. The man doing puzzles on the floor or playing hide and seek with his children. The man who just always seemed to have the right answers. The bounce in his step; the flutter of his laugh; his jokes, both attempted and successful; his smile will never be forgotten. Above all, his devotion to God is what guided his path. It made him, yes, an amazing brother and son, but it made him the BEST husband and father.
There was more love and more life lived in Vickie and Matt's marriage than many will ever feel. The life they created together is and forever will be beautiful and awe-inspiring. Some life events just bring you to your knees- and there, it is time to pray. Pray for the soul of our dear brother, Matthew. That he finds peace and eternal joy in the Kingdom of God. Pray for my beautiful sister, whose strength and grace in this time is unparalleled. That God wraps her up in His arms and helps heal her pain. Pray for their incredible boys and precious baby in the womb, whose innocence and purest love and admiration for their father gives you hope for brighter days. That they know and feel the love of their Dad everyday and one day be a shining example for all- just the way Matt has been.
For his family, give comfort and strength. For his friends, coworkers, and every community whose lives he touched, may they remember and honor him always. Thank you all for your outpouring of love and prayers. We appreciate it more than you know. In lieu of flowers or food, please consider giving to this tremendous fund to support and honor Matt's legacy, his precious wife and children."
