Girls on the Run Off to Flying Start
The 10-week program combines 5K training with discussions about issues facing pre-teen girls.
Girls on the Run's Summit 2 group opened its season Saturday morning. Coach Jen Hinger said 14 girls are participating and registration is still open. The group meets at Briant Park.
Another Summit GOTR, starting next week, has 44 girls ready to train and meets at Memorial Field.
Program director of Girls on the Run NJ East, Anne Klein said, "We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running."
According to its website, Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, character development program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. The organization inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run of New Jersey is an Affiliate Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 140 chapters across the United States and Canada.
The dynamic 10-week program combines training for a 5k (3.1 mile) running race with education and interactive discussions about critical issues that will affect pre-teen girls as they reach adolescence. Trained volunteer coaches teach life lessons to girls through fun and clever running games and workouts, the site explained.
