SUMMIT, NJ — Many are looking for fun ways to keep in shape for the new year and Masala Bhangra could be for you.
Maplewood local Mimi Stella currently teaches the Bollywood-inspired dance fitness class at the YMCA in Summit and soon to be at Front & Center-Performing Arts in Springfield.
Masala Bhangra was created by Sarina Jain where high-energy movements inspire an easy-to-follow routine to the beat of the Dhol Drum. A one-hour class burns about 700 calories.

Sixteen years ago, Sarina decided to take her culture's Indian dance and combine it with her passion for fitness and introduce it to the world through this program. Now, there are about 500 instructors teaching in 22 countries.
Stella, a dance instructor for more than 20 years, began teaching Masala Bhangra two years ago. She was a former jazz and modern dancer turned instructor. She taught West African dance and Zumba for many years.

“I was a dancer from the time I could breathe,” Stella said. “It was just a natural transition from a performer to instructor. I just love to teach.”
In Stella’s Masala Bhangra class she keeps the mood fun, upbeat and light. She cracks jokes as locals dance through the movements.
Men and women together danced and sweat through the class making the one-hour session fly by. All ages and exercise levels were welcomed as Stella broke down each move in an easy-to-follow progression through the dance.
“I try to form our class so that any level can get the same enjoyment,” Stella said.
The class is new to Summit as it has only been taught there since October. Yet it was already filled last week with participants.
The class is offered at the YMCA in Summit every Tuesday from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Check with Front & Center-Performing Arts in Springfield for the upcoming schedule.
