Man Indicted In New Year's Eve Fatal Stabbing In Plainfield

The roommate was found on the of a Plainfield home, where he was later pronounced dead at the hospital, prosecutor says.

PLAINFIELD, NJ — A Plainfield man was indicted by a Union County grand jury with fatally stabbing his roommate following an argument shortly before midnight this past New Year’s Eve, acting Union County Prosecutor Michael A. Monahan announced Wednesday.

Darin Jose Cano Vasquez, 24, is charged with first-degree murder and third- and fourth-degree weapons offenses in connection with the death of 43-year-old Alejandro Cadena-Toapanta.

Cadena-Toapanta was found on the front lawn of a home in the 600 block of West Front Street the suffering from multiple injuries at around 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 31 by Plainfield Police.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Vasquez was identified as a suspect and was taken into custody without incident in Plainfield on New Year's Day pending a first appearance in Superior Court later this week, authorities said. The arrest followed an investigation involving the Union County Homicide Task Force, Plainfield Police Division, and Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit.

Vasquez could face 30 years to life in state prison on the murder charge.
