“Ali has worked so hard to achieve this goal and we are so proud of everything she has accomplished,” said Oak Knoll field hockey coach Ali Good. “Ali is the perfect player to represent the United States. Her work ethic, skill and passion for the game is evident every time she steps on the field. Ali is a special player and we can't wait to watch the rest of her Oak Knoll and national team career unfold.”

To make the team, McCarthy had to first be selected, through a series of tryouts, to a regional team. McCarthy was then selected to the national team after competing against teams featuring the best field hockey players throughout the country. The national team practiced for more than six months in preparation for the international tournament, according to USA Field Hockey.
