SUMMIT, NJ — Overlook Medical Center was named New Jersey's top hospital by U.S. News and World Report in their 2019 rankings.

In the 2019-2020 Best Hospital rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report Overlook Medical Center was once again recognized as a Best Hospital in New Jersey and in the New York Metro area, marking nine consecutive years on the list. Overlook was also recognized as high-performing in three common adult procedures and conditions – Heart Failure, Colon Cancer Surgery and COPD.

To compile the rankings, U.S. News and World Report looked at 4,500 hospitals across the country and considered several metrics, including patient experience and outcome for the first time. The methodology also adjusts for how sick a patient was when they were admitted to the hospital so that hospitals that admit sicker patients are not penalized in the rankings.

Overlook was also one of only six hospitals in New Jersey to receive the 2019 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, from Healthgrades, placing Overlook in the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for providing outstanding quality outcomes in gynecologic surgery. This award was among Healthgrades’ annual Women’s Health Excellence awards, which also gave the Overlook gynecology and obstetrics team the Five-Star Award for C-sections and Hysterectomy.

Prior to these recognitions, Overlook was also recently ranked as number one in New Jersey and Top 100 in the Nation for Medical Excellence and Patient Safety in Major Neurosurgery by CareChex, a medical quality rating system that reviews hospital clinical quality, patient safety and performance of nearly all acute care hospitals and health systems in the U.S.

“The continued recognition that Overlook achieves, year after year, is the result of collaboration between our medical, clinical and support teams who ensure excellent outcomes, establish strong care coordination and lead innovation to provide the best care for our patients,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center.

U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals ranking and ratings, now in their 30th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

For the 2019-2020 ranking and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 165 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.
