Suicide Prevention Seminars To Be Held In Summit

Two suicide prevention seminars will be held at the Renissance Church in Summit on Jan. 28 geared for adults and teens.

SUMMIT, NJ — Two suicide prevention seminars will be held at the Renissance Church in Summit on Sunday, Jan. 28 geared for adults and teens.

The first seminar, Let’s Talk: Suicide Prevention Seminar, is geared towards adults and will be held on Sunday, Jan. 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Summit Opera House Auditorium.

  • Risk factors for suicide and protective factors against suicide
  • Warning signs
  • Intervention skills – step-by-step instructions when faced with someone who is considering suicide

The second seminar is geared for teenagers, Teens Helping Teens: An Interactive Suicide Prevention Seminar, will be held Sunday, Jan. 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ren Student Space.Dinner will be provided.

  • Emotional health and expressing our feelings
  • How to nurture our emotional health
  • The importance of empathy
  • Awareness of the problem among teens
  • Warning signs to look for in yourself and others
  • Risk factors for suicide and protective factors against suicide
  • Intervention skills – step-by-step instructions when faced with someone who is considering suicide

Both seminars will have presenter, Caring Contact’s Arlene Klemow, a certified Master ASIST Trainer and a suicide hotline volunteer. The events are free and open to the public.

"Depression and suicide are epidemics in America. We want to change that. We care about our community and want everyone to know they are not alone. We want to help people be there for those in need," said Tom Hansen, Pastor of Student Ministry at Renaissance Church.
