Summit Conductor Leads Local Orchestra

South Orange Symphony American-themed Concert on November 6

Arts activist Susan Haig of Summit keeps busy on Tuesday evenings! She heads over to nearby South Orange and takes up her baton to lead the South Orange Symphony, a community orchestra 68 years young. The orchestra is currently preparing for a November 6 concert of all-American composers to get everyone in the mood for the election. Haig joined the South Orange Symphony in the fall 2014 after the orchestra's two-year search for a conductor to replace long-time leader Bob Helmacy. She won out over four other contenders to become the orchestra's choice as their new conductor. Haig has previously led professional orchestras in South Dakota, Florida, and Windsor, Ontario.

South Orange Symphony presents three free concerts each season, including a newly-reinstated tradition of a Family Concert each February, with special features to engage young children. This year's Family Concert will be held on Sunday, February 12. All concerts are held in the South Orange Middle School Auditorium--the largest concert hall in the South Orange/Maplewood school district. Area musicians are encouraged to add their talent to the orchestra! More information about South Orange Symphony can be found at www.sosymphony.org
