Summit Drivers Be Vigilant: School Is Back In Session

SUMMIT, NJ - The City of Summit Police Department is urging drivers to exercise caution and parents to discuss some simple safety tips with children before the start of the new school year.

“Pedestrian safety is always a priority for Summit Police but particularly important at back to school time when students are excited about walking to and from school or may be distracted by seeing friends and meeting new teachers,” said Summit Police Lt. David Richel. “We encourage drivers to leave plenty of time for travel and pay close attention to safely sharing the road when driving.”

To help protect Summit’s youngest pedestrians, the Summit Police Department is sharing the following pedestrian safety tips to ensure a happy and safe school year:

• Look all ways before crossing a street.
• Cross streets only at corners and use crosswalks when available.
• Obey police officers, school crossing guards and traffic signals.
• Watch for turning cars and distracted drivers.
• Be particularly alert in bad weather.
• Do not run or play near motor vehicle traffic.
• Walk in groups to and from school.
• If you notice something dangerous, report it to an adult.

During the start of the new school year, police officers will be present and visible at all Summit schools to help ensure pedestrian safety, enforce parking regulations and address speeding issues.
