Summit Officials Give Breakdown Of Coronavirus Cases
Three of the fatalities were in nursing homes. The statewide death toll reached past 5,900 on Sunday.

SUMMIT, NJ — The coronavirus outbreak is continues to stun local residents.
In Summit, a city spokeswoman said on Friday that the New Jersey State Department of Health informed the city of five new positive cases in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 154. Over the weekend, the city got word of seven more confirmed cases over both days, bringing the total to 161 as of Sunday.
There have been a total of five deaths linked to the virus in Summit, three associated with long-term care facilities, like nursing homes, veterans' homes, and rehabs.

On Friday, the Westfield Regional Health Department released the following breakdown of the Summit cases:

- Ages range from 16 to 100
- 17 patients remain hospitalized
- 14 of the positive cases are associated with long-term care, such as nursing homes and rehabs (12 residents and two staff)
- 26 patients have self-reported recoveries
- 5 fatalities, 3 associated with long-term care.

- The Union County Covid-19 Drive Thru test center will have new hours, effective Monday: the facility will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The center is available to Union County residents who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. First responders and front-line health workers who are experiencing symptoms can also contact the center, regardless of their place of residence. Testing is free.

- On Sunday, Gov. Phil Murphy said that the number of deaths in New Jersey due to the virus was 5,938. The day before, he said the daily rate of new deaths had started to decline since hitting a record high of 379 on Tuesday. That was followed by 314 on Wednesday, 307 on Thursday, 253 on Friday. Experts say that the novel coronavirus, because it's new, is more lethal and much harder to treat than the flu. The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S. was on Jan. 21.
