Summit Releases August COVID Cases And How Many Were Vaccinated

The city of Summit released its coronavirus statistics for August, including how many said they were vaccinated.

SUMMIT, NJ — The city of Summit released on Friday the total number of coronavirus cases among residents in August, as well as how many of them were vaccinated.

The Westfield Regional Health Department reported 148 positive confirmed COVID-19 cases in
Summit during that month, the city said. For comparison, there were 34 cases in July 2021.

Cases began falling with vaccinations, but rose again with the highly transmissible Delta variant. Medical professionals have said that while vaccinated people can still get the virus, they are less likely to be hospitalized or to die from it than if unvaccinated.

In Summit, of the 148 positive confirmed cases, 62 cases with residents identified as fully vaccinated, said the city. They were asymptomatic or experienced mild symptoms, the city said, and no hospitalizations of residents from COVID were reported during August.

There was one death in June and one in July from the virus, the city said a week ago.

As of Friday, nationwide, more than 643,000 Americans have died from COVID, up by 11,000 since last Friday and 20,000 since two weeks ago. You can see which states have the highest recent death rates here.

Age Breakdowns For August:

• 31 cases ages 11 and younger;
• 18 cases aged 12 to 18;
• Seven cases aged 19 to 24;
• 12 cases aged 25 to 29;
• Nine cases aged 30 to 34;
• Five cases aged 35 to 39;
• 20 cases aged 40 to 44;
• Seven cases aged 45 to 49;
• 14 cases aged 50 to 54; and
• Seven case aged 55 to 59;
• Six cases aged 60 to 64;
• Four cases aged 65 to 69;
• Six cases aged 70 to 74;
• One case aged 85 to 89;
• One case aged 90 to 94

Vaccination Rates In Summit

Data from the New Jersey Department of Health showed vaccination rates in Summit are as follows:

Fully vaccinated:
• 74 percent of the entire population (up from 72 percent in July);
• 93 percent of adults aged 18+ (up from 90 percent in June);
• 91 percent of these aged 30+ (up from 89 percent in June); and
• 97 percent of those aged 65+ (up from 93 percent in June).

Where To Get Vaccinated Locally

The COVID vaccine is 95 percent effective against the virus, according to medical professionals, and while vaccinated people may have "breakthrough cases," there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death for those vaccinated.
